Cristiano Ronaldo’s Old Trafford exit ‘unacceptable’, says Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

Cristiano Ronaldo was pictured on social media leaving Old Trafford before the end of Sunday’s 1-1 friendly draw with Rayo Vallecano; Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag has called the Portugal forward’s early departure ‘unacceptable’

Ronaldo was pictured leaving Old Trafford with his United team-mate Diogo Dalot, but unlike his compatriot, the defender had not been included in the club’s squad to play Vallecano.

However, the 37-year-old – whose future at United is in doubt with reports he wants to leave in order to play for a club competing in next season’s Champions League – had featured in the first half against the Spaniards, before being substituted at the interval.

Ten Hag, though, was unimpressed with Ronaldo’s actions, telling Dutch media outlets AD and Viaplay that while “he was not the only one who left after half-time, I tell them [the players] that it’s unacceptable. That we are a team, and that you need to stay right until the very end.”

Ronaldo was absent for United’s recent pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia while he dealt with a family issue and only returned to training last week, when he and his agent, Jorge Mendes, held further talks about his future.

United are insistent, however, that they will not sanction the sale of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who is firmly in Ten Hag’s plans, although the new United boss has admitted the player is still a long way behind his team-mates in terms of fitness.

“He is not on the level of the rest of the squad because he missed a lot of weeks,” Ten Hag told Viaplay before Sunday’s clash with Rayo. “But he needs games and he needs training, a lot.”

Much has been made of whether Ronaldo fits into the new style of play Ten Hag is trying to implement at Old Trafford and whether he still has the ability to press from the front and play in a modern system.

However, Ten Hag, speaking in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports ahead of the new Premier League season, believes the Portugal international can prove that he can.

“I think he can,” Ten Hag told Sky Sports. “It starts with him getting fit because he’s only just started.

“He is a fantastic football player, and he has proved it so many times, but you are always judged on what you are presenting now and how you are performing now.

“So, the team and Cristiano himself has to prove it.”

“Basically, I want to thank the fans of mighty Asante Kotoko for the beautiful reception, I already feel at home because of the love showed me in the last few days and I promise to repay that faith and belief in me. I can’t wait to get started,” he said.

The former Uganda Premier League top scorer has been a top target for the Porcupine Warriors for the past two seasons and has finally signed for the Ghanaian giants.

Kotoko returned to the negotiations table with the goal-scoring machine as they search for a quality striker to replace Cameroonian striker Franck Mbella Etouga who is expected to leave the club before the 2022-23 season begins.

Mukwala sealed his transfer to the Porcupine Warriors on Wednesday after signing a two-year contract.

Mbella Etouga was outstanding for the Fabulous club last season in the Ghana Premier League, scoring 21 goals in 30 appearances helping them to clinch the title for the first time in eight years.

Mbella Etouga is expected to sign for Italian Serie A club Udinese Calcio in the coming days.

Mukwala who played for Uganda Revenue Authority SC in the last season will join Kotoko on a two-year contract with an option for another year.

The 23-year-old highly rated striker spent the 2019-20 season at Maroons FC where he was crowned top scorer of the Uganda Premier League.

He netted 13 goals in 23 appearances to emerge goal king of the 2019/2020 campaign while on loan from Vipers SC.

After his failed move to Ghana, the highly-rated striker signed for URA.

In his first season at the URA, the prolific attacker finished the 2020-21 campaign as the 3rd top scorer with 14 goals in 24 matches.

Mukawala in the second season at URA scored 13 goals in 26 games in the Ugandan top-flight, five behind the top scorer Cesar Lobi Manzoki who netted 18 goals at the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

Mukwala made his competitive debut for the Uganda national team on 6 September 2021 when the Cranes played Mali in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

He has 11 international caps for the Uganda national team in total since making his debut and is also yet to score a goal.

Mukawala has 40 goals in 73 appearances across the last three seasons in the Ugandan top-flight.

Ghana goalkeeper Jojo Wollacot excels as Charlton Athletic secure valuable point against Accrington Stanley

Black Stars goalkeeper, Jojo Wollacot, produced an impressive display as Charlton Athletic held Accrington Stanley in Ligue One opener on Saturday.

The Ghana international was exceptional especially in the second half, but a last minute equalizer from Korede Adedoyin saw the two sides share the spoils.

Jojo Wollacot made four great saves to deny the hosts in the second half and only conceded from close range due to some poor defending.

Charlton took the lead in the first half when Diallang Jaiyesimi’s cross found Scott Fraser who side-footed home from 12 yards.

The hosts levelled in the 69th minute through Sean McConville.

Miles Leaburn gave Charlton the lead in the 94th minute but the celebrations were shortlived as Adedoyin equalized two minutes later.

Wollocat’s impressive display could see him take over the starting role over last season’s regular shot-stopper Craig MacGillivray.

Hearts of Oak complete signing of experienced goalkeeper Eric Ofori Antwi

Hearts of Oak have completed the signing of the former Ghana U20 goalkeeper Eric Ofori Antwi ahead of the upcoming football season, GHANAsoccernet.com can confirm.

The 27-year-old joins the Phobians on a three-year contract after parting ways with Legon Cities FC after the 2021-22 season ended.

Antwi is expected to be a direct replacement for Richmond Ayi who has been linked with a move to American side FC Cincinatti.

The experienced shot stopper joined Cities at the beginning of the last season after leaving Medeama SC.

He made 16 appearances in the Ghana Premier League where he managed to keep five clean sheets and conceded 14 goals in the process.

Antwi was named man of the match in the opening day fixture against Hearts at the Accra Sports Stadium after his exploits earned Cities a point from the game.

The former Ghana youth goalie has previously played for Hearts’ sworn rivals Asante Kotoko SC from August 2014 to January 2017.

He was transferred to Kotoko after excelling in his maiden Ghana Premier League season with newly-promoted Amidaus Professionals in the 2011-12 campaign.

Antwi was the first choice goalkeeper for Ghana during the FIFA U20 World Cup which was held in Turkey in 2013.

In-form Bernard Tekpetey scores for Ludogorets in Champions League

Bernard Tekpetey continued his fine scoring form this season with another goal for Bulgarian side Ludogorets.

The Ghanaian striker scored in their 2-1 defeat to Dynamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

It was his fourth goal of the season, but his second in two games, having scored last weekend in Ludogorets’ league victory over Spartak Varna.

Tekpetey’s goal on Tuesday was not enough to salvage Ludogorets from defeat with the club now needing to beat Dynamo away in the second leg to advance to the next stage of the competition.

After missing out on the Africa Cup of Nations squad earlier this year, the 24-year-old is vying for a spot in Ghana’s World Cup squad in 2022. His form has been excellent, but he must keep it up if he is to be invited by coach Otto Addo.

He is currently Ghana’s most lethal in Europe with four goals in nine games.

Tekpety played a key role in Ludogorets winning the league last season, and the club’s goal this season is to defend that title. They’ve had a good start so far, thanks to Tekpetey’s influence.

Uncle T United boss Isaac Tetteh charges Ghana FA to restructure league to attract sponsorship

Uncle T United president Isaac Tetteh has urged the Ghana FA to restructure the domestic top-flight to attract sponsors.

The Ghanaian elite division has been hit with a ritual exodus of key players after every season to deny the top-flight of consistent quality.

Bechem United machine Augustine Okrah has left for Tanzanian giants Simba FC while Asante Kotoko midfielder Mudasiru Salifu has joined Moldovan giants FC Sheriff Tiraspol.

Kotoko striker Franck Mbella Etouga is on his way to Italian outfit Udinese while a number of top stars are believed to be on their way ahead of the new season.

The mass exodus has affected sponsorship for the domestic league with clubs struggling to pay players.

But Uncle T United president and former Hearts of Oak official Isaac Tetteh has charged the FA to change the narrative.

“When the league is well structured, it will also guarantee solid national teams, “he said.

“Football is all we have so the FA should do everything within its power to make it more attractive.”
